SPIRITS - Definition, presentation and labelling of spirit drinks: Parliament committee discussions

On 24 January, the ENVI committee voted on the above draft report. This proposal aligns EU legislation on spirit drinks with the Lisbon Treaty. In addition, it contains technical adjustments of such legislation and it replaces the existing procedures for the management of geographical indications in the spirit drinks sector, with new procedures modelled on the more exhaustive and well tested procedures for agricultural products and foodstuffs.

The Rapporteur supports the alignment of the legislation on spirit drinks to the Lisbon Treaty. However, she considers it important to maintain the prerogatives Parliament already had under the legislation in force in any alignment process. The compromises amendments cover a wide range of issues including among others the protection for geographical indications referred to goods entering the EU customs territory without being released for free circulation, the delegation of powers, the definition of the origin of a spirit drink and the procedure applicable for spirits intended for export.

This relates to the Commission proposal published in COM(2016)0750. See: Proposal and Annexes.
