Understanding my Marks
It is important to know that marks can be amended after they move from Blackboard to RISIS and that this can happen across the academic year.
The marks on RISIS are always the most up-to-date marks.
Blackboard is where your assessments are marked and where you can first see your marks along with feedback on how to improve your work.
Assessment marks shown in Blackboard (in the Gradebook) are the original marks. Any amendments that are made to your marks will NOT be updated on Blackboard. Therefore the mark shown on Blackboard may not be the most up-to-date.
More information on viewing your marks in Blackboard.
Your marks are formally managed in RISIS and any amendments will be shown here.
Its important to know that your marks may be amended during the academic year (as a result of moderation or penalties applied). This means that your mark in RISIS may not match the mark shown in Blackboard. Your most up-to-date marks will be displayed in RISIS.
You can view your marks in the:
• Sub Modular Marks Table
Lists all marks achieved to date in the current and previous years as well as the overall module mark when this is calculated
• Student Progress Dashboard
Is a graphical display of marks achieved to-date in the current year and a weighted running average calculation. This gives you a rough indication of what your end of year result might look like if you continue to submit assessments of the same standard as to-date.
More information on the Dashboard
The marks displayed in RISIS are used to calculate your:
• module mark
• end of year result and progression (i.e. whether you can progress to the next year of study)
• final degree outcome.
On RISIS you will be able to see:
• All your assessment marks in one place.
• If any marks have been amended.
• Your module mark, once calculated.
• The publication date of your final module results will be published on the Exams webpage.
• Late penalty
A deduction to the initial mark, with the reason shown in RISIS.
• Internal moderation
If moderation occurs after marks have been released to you, your mark may be updated, with the reason shown in RISIS.
• Academic misconduct
Mark changes as a result of an academic misconduct investigation will be shown in RISIS.
• External review
Your marks are reviewed by external examiners and the exam boards.
Module marks
• are calculated on the basis of the weighting of the assessments as set out on the module description for each module
End of year results and progression requirements
• End of year results are calculated from the module marks held in RISIS.
• Progression requirements are set out in the programme specification for each programme. These can vary by programme but they usually specify that a certain number of modules must be passed in addition to achieving an overall mark. Check the progression requirements for your programme.
Degree outcome
• Is calculated from module marks held in RISIS. For programmes taken across a number of years this usually include modules across the final two years of study. However, there is a lot of variability by programme and the specific requirements are set out in the programme specification by programme.

Students should be aware that marks and grades given to them during any part of a degree programme are subject to moderation by internal and external examiners, who may recommend changes either to the marks of a particular student or to those of a whole group. Marks remain provisional until they have been scrutinised and approved by the appropriate Examiners’ Meeting and formally published by the University. Provisional marks are provided for guidance only and you should be mindful that they may change before the formal publication of results.
