Westminster Abbey Archives: Calender of documents

This collection consists of the typed second copy of the Calendar to the documents (a detailed catalogue, often with transcriptions) in Westminster Abbey's archive. It is sufficiently detailed for a great deal of primary research to be conducted using it, though in some cases students and scholars might wish to consult the original document held in the Westminster Abbey Muniment Room and Library

The material held covers a wide date range, from early Anglo-Saxon charters, through to the 20th century, and the Abbey held properties over a wide area of London and south-east England. The abbey was the coronation church, and became the burial church of the English monarchy, and was often closely involved with the adjoining Palace of Westminster. This makes the Calendar a potential source for political as well as church history.

The Calendar is written on file cards, and these are held in a set of 29 boxes arranged by document number. There is also a handwritten index to the documents, on cards held in boxes arranged alphabetically.
