Summary module description:
In this module the student is required to research and review an agreed meteorological topic of current interest over a period of 5 weeks. At the end of this period, the student will provide a written report reviewing and summarising research in the chosen field. The student is also required to present a poster summarising the main findings.
Aims:
This module aims to develop the students research skills from the experience of carrying out a supervised literature review on a selected topic relevant to the students chosen degree registration.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
• Demonstrate acquisition of expert knowledge relating to a particular scientific issue;
• Prepare a report in the style of a scientific consultancy;
• Present a poster suitable for a scientific audience.
Additional outcomes:
Students will enhance their writing and presentation skills and their use of library and IT resources.
Outline content:
In consultation with an academic supervisor, the student will choose a topic to review, and will then carry out a literature review and write a short report of about 2000 words summarising the current state of research in the chosen topic. The report should be in the style of a short scientific consultancy including a one page executive summary At the end of the project the student will also present the findings as a poster presentation.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The student is expected to research the material independently using library and internet facilities available on campus, and will meet with the supervisor at least once per week to discuss progress.
