Summary module description:
The module aims to develop the awareness of the stylistic and cultural differences in French and English written expression. Students are made familiar with the respective conventions of a variety of registers, and are able to produce texts in French and English in the relevant register.

The module aims to develop the awareness of the stylistic and cultural differences in French and English written expression. Students are made familiar with the respective conventions of a variety of registers, and are able to produce texts in French in the relevant register.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, students will be able:
To participate fully in group & teamwork
To use confidently the lexis of French and English, translating from one language to the other with accuracy, both orally and in writing
Have developed awareness of translation theory, and the ability to justify translation choices in an analytical manner.
Additional outcomes:
This module aims to encourage active comparison between the linguistic structures of English and French. This module will familiarise students with a wide variety of registers of English and French, both spoken and written, and introduce them to the key concepts of translation theory.
Outline content:
Texts ranging from the journalistic to the highly literary and dating from the nineteenth century to the contemporary.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Weekly classes. Texts are provided for translation to be prepared at home which are then corrected and discussed in the group.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
One analytical translation 50%, one class test 25% and one translation 25%.
Formative assessment methods:
Weekly translation preparation; oral presentations.

Reassessment in August, in the event of failure in this module, coursework for reassessment must be resubmitted by 12 NOON on the third Friday of August or, if the University is closed on the third Friday of August, by 12 NOON on the first working day thereafter.
