Summary module description:
This module builds on the exploration of childrens literature from previous modules. With a focus on fantasy and realism students will investigate how literature is categorised and compare the value placed on different types of texts. As technology continues to impact on reading, the module also explores the concept of the book as a physical object and compares its value against other formats.
Aims:
To develop the student as a critical reader of a wide range of texts with a broader and deeper understanding of the value and meaning of literature
To discuss how literature is categorised and compare the value placed on different types of texts
To explore the concept of literature as cultural capital
To gain an awareness of how the study of literary theory supports and complements the study of literature
Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion, candidates will:
Demonstrate an ability to critically engage with a range of sources and texts
Be able to synthesise arguments about the relative merits of different formats and the perceived quality of different texts
Be able to propose and defend an argument about the merits (or otherwise) of books read

Demonstrate how the study of the theory of literature supports and complements the study of childrens literature
Widen understanding of the traditional genre of childrens literature Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which readers respond to texts, including personal response
Outline content:
This module involves reading, and reviewing, a range of literature that will include literary prize winners, such as The Man Booker Prize. In terms of childrens literature, the module will also include a range of prize winning authors.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This module will be delivered in interactive sessions, which include lecturing, discussion and practical activities, and which will include blended learning, provided through Blackboard.
