Summary module description:
The school placement provides students with experiences of teaching and learning in a school setting that extends and consolidates their learning in ED1SX1 in order to enable them to demonstrate the Teachers Standards and develop their understanding.
Students undertake school placements with the support of a school and university tutor. ED2PS1, Professional Studies, is a co-requisite as it supports students for this placement across the year.

To develop teaching and planning skills for large groups and whole class, where appropriate
To provide further insight into theoretical and practical aspects of effective teaching
To manage effectively the learning for individuals, groups and the whole class, where appropriate
Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, trainees will be able to:
make positive and respectful relationships with children and adults,
demonstrating professional attitudes and values
work with a class teacher, school mentor and other staff to devise and implement plans for the teaching and learning of children in the appropriate Key Stage
teach and manage effectively individuals, groups and whole classes
increase your understanding of children's learning and gain insight into good teaching skills through reflecting on children's progress and adapting planning accordingly
respond positively as a professional, reflective practitioner to constructive
criticism and discussion of areas for development

Outline content:
Attendance at school placement will include: Discussion with professional colleagues in school; planning and teaching individuals, small groups and the whole class: becoming involved with the wider life of the school and working to the national Teachers' Standards
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The student will work alongside an experienced teacher and will implement the ideas and principles met during the taught Modules ED2PS1, ED2AC1, ED2AC2, ED2AC3, ED2EC1, ED2MS1& ED2PF1. They will learn through discussion, reflection, teacher feedback and gaining practical experience. The placement school experience involves 4 single day visits in the Autumn or Spring terms linked to subject specialism and a 7-week block school placement in the Summer term.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Satisfactory progress towards meeting the national Teachers' Standards as demonstrated through an Evidence Log and reported by the school mentor and University tutors.
Formative assessment methods:
Ongoing methods of assessment include observation feedback, discussions with mentor and tutor, self-reflection and target setting and review. Student engagement and attendance on the single day visits will also be monitored and feedback given. Students will be expected to keep a professional school experience file as part of the block placement requirements.
Penalties for late submission:
Attendance at school placement is mandatory, as is meeting the requirements of the School Experience File and the placement school's professional routines and deadlines. Absence from placement can be taken for illness and be self-certified for up to one week. Any longer absences must be granted by an Extenuating Circumstances Form (ECF) and when the ECF runs out the student must return to placement. In the event of a student missing placement for an unauthorised reason the Module Convenor will review the circumstances and a Fail grade may be recorded.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
Satisfactory progress towards meeting the national Teachers' Standards. This module is Pass/Fail only
Reassessment arrangements:
Resit of part, or whole, of the block placement.

3) Specialist clothing, footwear or headgear: No specialist clothing is required for this module, although students should be mindful that overly casual clothing will not be acceptable in the professional placement environment.

6) Travel, accommodation and subsistence: Students are expected to pay £2.50 per day towards the travel costs of reaching their placement school. The remainder of the costs can be claimed back from the university but only based on economy mileage or if standard class transport has been used and the cheapest ticket obtained. Students should expect to pay the cost up front and claim back at the end of the placement.
