Summary module description:
The study of commercial surveying practices and advanced building pathology.
Aims:
To provide the knowledge for a student to understand the role of the Commercial Surveyor and the identification, diagnosis and remedy of defects to commercial buildings.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module , it is expected that the student will be able to :
. explain the types of survey and the methodology for undertaking these to commercial buildings
. understand the lifecycle of materials used for commercial buildings and the factors affecting this
. understand the legal/technical frameworks associated with advising building owners and investors
. undertake a building inspection and record data collected on site
. propose viable technical solutions for rectifying defects to commercial buildings
. report and present evidence based data collected during a building survey
Additional outcomes:
Students will develop their observational skills used to identify and record site data, they will also enhance their IT skills by use of relevant web resources and databases.
Outline content:
Examination of the types and methodologies for undertaking building inspections;
The concept of material lifecycles.
Site investigation and condition assessment.
Repairing techniques and methods of upgrading fire protection and disabled access to existing buildings.
Project management and contract administration of maintenance and refurbishment work.
The specification, planning, budgeting and pricing of maintenance and refurbishment work.
