Summary module description:
This is an introduction into child language acquisition.
Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of language development in typically developing children, and introduce current theories in child language acquisition.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:
* Identify the main stages of language development;
* Demonstrate a knowledge and critical understanding of principles and issues in child language acquisition as well as an understanding of the stages of language development in typically developing children;
* Synthesise ideas and controversies in the field of first language acquisition;
* Engage in critical reflective argument.
Additional outcomes:
Students will learn to carry out computer-aided analyses of child language data. They will be able to make connections between theoretically driven ideas of child language acquisition and clinical data.
Outline content:
The first part of the module concentrates on language development in typically developing children between the age of 2 and 4. The second part of the course covers theories of child language acquisition.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Nine two-hour lectures once a week for 9 weeks and 1 two-hour practical session.
