Summary module description:

To integrate academic knowledge with developing professional and clinical skills within a clinical environment and to develop clinical competencies in assessment and treatment across the lifespan.

Aims:
The aims of this module are: to enable students (with support) to be clinically competent in the assessment of paediatric and adult clients; to develop skills in holistic therapeutic design for paediatric and adult clients and to gain understanding of the communication profile of the typical elderly population.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of this module, it is expected that the students will be able to

• Assess and plan interventions for paediatric and adult clients with communication impairments (with support).


• Explain features of impaired communication in paediatric and adult clients relative to relevant medical, psychological and linguistic models.


• Justify assessment and therapeutic decisions relative to the research evidence and to models of speech and language therapy service delivery.


• Discuss the medical, psychological, and linguistic factors that affect communication


• Explain how and why the speech and language therapist would investigate the impact of communication impairment on the social well being of a client.


• Demonstrate professional written and verbal communication skills.

Additional outcomes:
􀀕 Consider how a speech and language therapist might work in a residential setting to support a person with eating/drinking or communication difficulties, identifying the potential barriers and providing a solution to them.
􀀕 Evaluate own clinical communication skills and take responsibility for identifying goals for personal professional development.

Outline content:
A variety of adult and paediatric placements are attended and assessed with reference to the HPC standards of proficiency. Lectures look further at the process of assessment and interpretation within clinical practice and establish the theoretical and practical basis for the development of counselling skills.
Clinical tutorial and Clinical Skills seminars: these prepare the students for the year􀀒s clinical placements considering the development of skills within the framework of the relevant HPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics. These include the practise of clinical skills such as self reflection, knowledge of clinical practice issues and processes, professionalism and communication skills as well as service delivery considerations within the context of social, health and education settings.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Lectures, clinical seminars, workshops using video case studies, tutorials, clinical placements, log keeping and VLE for assessments.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

A clinical portfolio submitted in the Spring term; portfolio viva in the Spring term. Clinical placement reports, graded by supervising clinicians at the completion of each placement, from the Autumn, Spring and Summer will be pass/fail. If all are passed 10% will be awarded.

Clinical report from the summer term of Part 2.

Peer feedback on development of assessment skills. Peer feedback on case presentation.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% in the module (with all assessments submitted,a mark of no less than 30% in any one assessment, and a pass in the clinical placement reports).

Reassessment arrangements:
Resubmission of coursework or retaking of clinical portfolio by September.

6) Travel, accommodation and subsistence: Travel to one day a week placement in each of Autumn, Spring and Summer terms. Costs reported by students vary from £0 to £300+ per term with the median cost being £115. The cost will vary each term. There may be some accommodation cost depending on location of Summer block placement.
