Summary module description:
The foundation subjects are covered through inputs from humanities, art and design, P.E., ICT, primary languages, music, and design and technology. This module is concerned with models of good practice and the effective teaching of the foundation subjects, Primary Languages and RE within the National Curriculum 2000, the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, Locally agreed syllabus. Through a range of University based lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops and activities, combined with school-based tasks and activities trainees are expected to develop their understanding of how children learn and make progress. They consider a range of teaching approaches, planning appropriate to individual needs, the potential for ICT to support both teaching and learning, the selection of appropriate resources, including outside agencies and how assessments can be used to inform planning and monitoring of progress.

Aims:
- A knowledge and understanding national requirements for the foundation subjects and RE
- Understand the statutory requirements for assessment, recording, reporting and accountability in the foundation subjects, Primary Languages and RE
- An ability to implement national statutory and non-statutory guidance effectively
- Appreciate how health and safety practices are integral to lesson planning
- Develop personal knowledge, skills and understanding to ensure progression in the children􀀒s learning in the foundation subjects, Primary Languages and RE
- Skills in planning for teaching and learning, with appropriate expectations and targets, including the integration of ICT to support learning and teaching
- An ability to implement assessment and recording strategies to inform planning
- Awareness of subject specific research on how children learn and common errors and misconceptions in the foundation subjects, Primary Languages and RE

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students will:
􀀕 Know the purpose, scope, structure and balance of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum as they relate to the foundation subjects, Primary Languages and RE
􀀕 Effectively work with national and local initiatives
􀀕 Demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding to teach the foundation subjects and RE, with guidance, within specific teaching contexts.
􀀕 Demonstrate a range of teaching strategies to support children􀀒s learning
􀀕 Identify, avoid and address common errors and misconceptions

Additional outcomes:
The aims are based on the Teachers􀀒 Standards and criteria for initial teacher training as set out by the Secretary of State and the NCTL. They have been specifically developed to meet the needs of students within the primary and Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. This module will provide evidence towards achievement of the Teachers􀀒 Standards.

Outline content:
This module will provide subject specific sessions on music, art, P.E., primary languages, design and technology, humanities and ICT. There will be opportunities to consider cross-curricular links.

Global context:
Global citizenship is an integral part of this module.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
A range of University based lectures, presentations, seminars and workshops will be used. These will link to school-based tasks within students􀀒 placements and independent activities. Block school practices will contribute to achievement of the outcomes. The placement school experience involves 35 days in the Autumn term, 40 days in the Spring term and 45 days in the Summer term.

Formative assessment methods:
Each SBT requires a lesson plan (or alternative document) to be uploaded onto Blackboard to contribute to a resource bank. This will be a focus for discussion and reflection.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Engagement with all prescribed School Based Tasks (evidenced by the PDP checklist) is required to pass this module (Pass/Fail)

Electronic copies of handouts are uploaded to Blackboard prior to sessions and it is expected that students will EITHER print these OR access and take notes on an electronic device during the session
