Summary module description:
This module forms part of the Joint Programme Board Postgraduate Diploma in Foundation Pharmacy Practice.

Aims:
To demonstrate systematic and critical understanding of the knowledge and skills required to work independently within a specific area of pharmacy practice.

Assessable learning outcomes:

?Make decisions in complex situations where patients present with co-morbidities and/or poly-pharmacy
?Demonstrate an independent learning ability when engaging with their continuing professional development.
?Actively contribute to the planning and delivery of pharmaceutical care in the placement setting
?Evaluate and critique the approaches used (including the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) framework or similar) when appraising the medical literature
?Critically evaluate, using an appropriate framework, the relevant medical literature as applied to an appropriate area of prescribing, as it relates to the placement
?Identify, prioritise and resolve the pharmaceutical care needs of patients representative of the placement population
?Apply the principles of clinical governance and relate them to evidence based practice

Outline content:
The syllabus will build on elements described in the Foundation stage 1 “Introduction to Foundation Pharmacy Practice” module in order to facilitate competent and independent practice. This will require the practitioner to have a sound grasp of the tools used to undertake a literature evaluation and an ability to apply these to an area of prescribing practice as it relates to the placement they are undertaking. Practitioners will describe the steps which underpin evidence based practice (EBP) and the scale of hierarchy used to rank evidence; know the common sources used for EBP and specifically how the CASP framework is applied to the evaluation process; apply the validity components when undertaking a critical evaluation and specifically to be able to calculate and interpret absolute risk reduction, relative risk reduction, numbers needed to treat and odds ratios.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Guided, self-directed practitioner learning is actively encouraged, supported by a range of resources including the library facilities at their practice base, the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment and the world wide web. Practitioners will be expected to develop the skill of critical evaluation of literature, and appropriate use of web-based information will facilitate development of this skill.

An accredited educational supervisor will guide the experiential learning in the defined practice placements using a set of appropriate patient focused objectives.

A series of regular formal learning sets will underpin the module and allow for contact between practitioners and academic staff practising as clinical pharmacists,
In the learning sets, practitioners will discuss, with an academic facilitator, evidence from their professional development portfolio as well as progress in the associated module tasks.

In addition, practitioners will be required, through regular timetabled meetings with their educational supervisor to discuss their personal development.

The placement provides an opportunity to work with pharmacists within the defined practice area(s), as well as colleagues from the multi-disciplinary team.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
Practitioners are required to have competence of all elements in the FPF and satisfactory RITAs; evidence for this must be included in the portfolio. Practitioners are required to achieve a pass mark of 50% in the therapeutic review in addition to achieving any necessary essential elements of assessment. The portfolio has a pass mark of 50%, being marked in line with the Masters level marking criteria.

Reassessment arrangements:
If coursework or assessments do not meet the required standard, Practitioners will be given an opportunity to resubmit / resit the failed element. All reassessments which meet the required standard are graded as a bare pass of 50% only.
