Summary module description:

The module is specifically aimed at investigating the challenges faced by leaders. It is based on issues often presented in leadership coaching sessions. It is delivered by a combination of face-to-face workshops, small group activities, personal reflection and self-study, over a period of several months, alongside other modules in this stage of the programme.


This module aims to: 

  • Provide a thorough underpinning of understanding on the foundations of neuroscience and leadership behaviour 

  • Give examples of leadership coaching case studies, with neuroscience commentary illustrating how and why the coaching interventions work 

  • Enable students to reflect upon their own leadership experiences and challenges, and experiment with both coaching others and receiving coaching themselves on real life leadership issues. 

  • Develop an understanding of why the requirements of leadership are challenging for people, and how leadership development interventions, including coaching, can be used to improve leadership practice in organisations 

Assessable learning outcomes:

  • Understanding of coaching in a leadership context 

  • Understanding of leadership challenges, and why they occur 

  • Understanding of the basic insights into leadership coaching from the field of neuroscience 

  • Practical skills of coaching and being coached in a leadership context 


The programme member will receive feedback from peers and tutors on these outcomes throughout the module. This will contribute to their reflective statement in the final assignment for assessment

  • Understanding the effectiveness, or lack of effectiveness, of leadership development practices in their organisations 

Outline content:

The module covers the following topics: 


  • Introduction to Leadership coaching 

  • Introduction to the basic foundations of neuroscience 

  • Practical application to personal leadership challenges 

  • Examination of leadership coaching case studies through the lens of neuroscience

  • Investigation of a range of coaching tools and techniques 

Global context:


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Teaching methods include working in a whole group of up to 50 with one or two tutors, and in smaller groups of up to 8 programme members. Other learning activities take place in pairs and individual reflection. 

Teaching includes input from tutors, demonstrations of techniques and practice in small groups. Plenary discussion and table discussions are encouraged. Formative and summative feedback is given as appropriate. 

Programme&nbs p;members are expected to draw on their practical leadership experience in their own or other organisations to support their learning and their assignments. They have access to the Virtual Learning Environment throughout the programme, until the end of their registration period. 

Programme members are encouraged to keep a personal learning log, paper or electronic, during both this module and the complete programme.

This comprises a final written report of 5000 words, based on the experience of the leadership practice and personal leadership development during the overall period of the module. This should reflect on the activities which took place, learning reflections, and be underpinned with reference and critical analysis of the relevant literature. 


The assignment is the only piece of work assessed in this module. It is expected that the programme member will reference the other elements of their development portfolio, such as learning logs and reflective documents, and include them as required in the appendix of the assignment. These additional elements of the portfolio will be included in the same electronic submission as the assignment. 


Assessment submission is according to the assessment schedule for the student’s cohort. 

Formative assessment methods:

Feedback from tutors and peers is formative and supports leadership development during this module.

As university post-experience postgraduate programmes 

Assessment requirements for a pass:

Minimum of 50%

Reassessment arrangements:

One re-submission allowed, capped at 50%
