Summary module description:

In this part practical module, students’ project-based studio work will focus on the exploration and use of a variety of mediums, materials and techniques, and will stimulate the intuitive and conceptual response to materials through imagination, observation, recollection and visual research. The students’ understanding of the formal language of art will also be broadened. The lecture programme will extend and strengthen students’ knowledge and understanding of styles, trends and issues in 20th and 21st century art.


Aims:

• To enable students to focus specifically on the development of their art practice

• To facilitate the communication and expression of personal ideas through art practice

• To provide opportunities for independent and collaborative work

• To develop understanding and use of the formal languages of art

• To provide insight into 20th and 21st Century art practices

• To develop in written form critical and contextual understanding of 20th and 21st Century art practices

• To develop oral communication skills through individual presentations and group discussions

• To engage students in critical discussion about their own and others’ art practice

• To identify the potential of the practical projects for development as activities for children in the classroom

• To begin to develop the students’ understanding of their potential role as artist teacher 


Assessable learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will:

• Communicate and express ideas through personal art practice in a variety of mediums and using a range of techniques

• Demonstrate the ability to use the formal language of art and engage in critical discussion about their own and others’ art practice

• Demonstrate in written form an increased depth and breadth of knowledge relating to 20th and 21st century styles, trends and issues in art practice

• Demonstrate the ability to develop personal ideas and art practice in the context of classroom practice

Successful candidates will:



• Demonstrate the ability to study independently and collaboratively in order to assimilate and communicate sound knowledge and understanding and draw upon that knowledge to inform their personal art practice

• Reflect critically upon the development of their own art practice including their ability to make art from an informed perspective

• Undertake focused research and achieve greater critical awareness through the use of literature, e learning and gallery/museum research


Outline content:

This module enables students to develop their own art practice using a broad range of mediums, materials and techniques under the guidance of tutors. Related directed independent research into the work of a range of relevant artists will extend students’ knowledge and understanding of modern and contemporary art and how to draw upon that knowledge to develop personal practice.



The lecture and seminar programme and independent research requirements will extend students’ knowledge and understanding of modern and contemporary art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Individual artists will be studied in the context of avant-gardism and the various related movements, which have characterised developments in 20th and 21st century art practice.



Styles, trends and issues in 20th and 21st century art practice will be discussed and debated within the context of the students’ own art practice.



The module also requires students to spend additional hours in the studio developing their personal art practice.


Global context:

There will be some research into the international practice of art and artists.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The part practical programme will incorporate a range of tutor-led introductory theory and practice-based sessions, directed reading and guided independent research. There will be individual and group tutorials with tutors. Students will undertake independent research visits to galleries and museums. The module will use a range of blended learning techniques.

A written assignment of 2,500 words 


Formative assessment methods:

A sample of writing (1,000 words approx) will be used to give formative feedback on writing style, organisation and referencing. 


Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    1. Required text books: Additional costs will vary according to the choice of texts used. Students should expect to spend in the region of £10.00 in order to complete this module.

    2. Printing and binding: Occasional printing of materials, although photocopies of materials will be provided in the teaching sessions. Students will need to provide a printed copy of their assessment. Library printing costs are 5p for B/W page and 15p for colour page
