Student Voices: Life at Reading

What is it really like to study at Reading as an international student? Our students share their experiences of settling into university life, making connections, discovering new opportunities, and finding a sense of belonging.

 

“Over the past three years, some of my favourite experiences at university have been the events and social activities organised through the Global Study Lounge. I especially enjoyed the English Conversation Café, which gave international students a welcoming space to practise spoken English while meeting new friends from different backgrounds. The Friday get-togethers were also a highlight, with fun crafts and board games. Events like the Chinese New Year celebration gave me a chance to celebrate my culture while studying in the UK and the university feels so welcoming and supportive for international students like me.”

“Studying at UoR was the first time I'd ever lived abroad. Honestly? I was terrified I'd just be lonely with no support, but the community here has a way of making you feel seen and like you belong. The English Conversation Cafés and Friday get-togethers quickly became my escape from research: a warm cup of tea and a chat, exactly what I needed to stop feeling isolated, practise my speaking, and meet people from all over the world. My advice is to say yes and show up to the events. It's the place to make friends, create memories, and enjoy your journey."

"My main advice to any new student of UoR is never to stop asking questions! Believe me, you will never need to feel alone here at uni. There is always someone there who can answer your questions, finds themselves in the same struggle, or points out an answer to a question you never even knew you had. Asking questions has enabled me to achieve three RED awards within my first year alongside studying, now I will be a STAR mentor next year. The staff is super supportive, and events from the Global [...Study Lounge], the Careers Centre, and the Study Advice are incredibly helpful to settle into your new university life!"

''Doing a PhD can sometimes feel intense and a little isolating, especially as an international student, but what has helped me most at Reading is building connections beyond my research. Having supportive supervisors, taking part in university events, and getting involved in the community have made a huge difference. One of my favourite experiences was helping at the Reading Community Festival, where I spoke to children and families about floods and sustainability through our research activities. Moments like that reminded me that a PhD is not just about working alone, but also about sharing ideas, finding your people, and feeling part of something bigger.''

"One of the things that stood out most during my time at the University of Reading was the incredible financial support I received. I was fortunate to be awarded several scholarships and grants, including the Excellence Scholarship, GIIDAE, Santander, and Student Financial Support. One challenge I faced was balancing part-time work with lectures and academic responsibilities. However, I also gained valuable opportunities by building friendships with people from diverse backgrounds and becoming part of a supportive Christian community. My advice to new students is to connect with alumni, returning students, or members of staff as soon as you arrive on campus. They can provide invaluable guidance and support."

“One of the best parts about being a student here is working on different campus jobs. It’s a great way to earn while studying, but also a fun opportunity to meet people. I’ve worked in a few roles – helping at events and being a Star Mentor. It’s genuinely rewarding. Another highlight was the trip to Winchester which I heard about through the Global Study Lounge and International Student mailing list. It was a refreshing break from studies, and a great chance to meet students from all over the world. Spending time together exploring a beautiful city made me feel more at home and part of a supportive, welcoming community.”

“[When] joining the University of Reading, I sought to balance rigorous research with a rich social life. Finding this balance was somewhat easy, thanks to International Student Events. A culture of student support is the university’s DNA, fostering success on all fronts. Whilst leveraging library resources for my research, I’ve also enjoyed social events such as the English Conversation Cafés, Ramadan Community Iftar, and Salsa Society. The Iftar event stood out, promoting unity, empathy, and spiritual reflection, an experience everyone should have!”

“Some say a Master’s degree is one of the most hectic, inspiring, and rewarding experiences, so getting accepted onto my course felt like a blessing. Coming from pen-and-paper learning, moving to digital platforms was a big step. I really appreciated those who helped me with this transition. Staff have been incredibly helpful throughout my journey here. Beyond academics, the University has done a great job of making international students feel welcome, from daily support to weekly English Conversation Cafés and Get-togethers! Reading truly feels like my home away from home. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The support is there, and it makes all the difference.”
