UROP FAQs for staff

Answers to frequently asked questions relating to UROP, but if there's anything missing, please get in touch.

Is there any funding for research expenses?

At this stage, funding for research expenses is not covered by the scheme.

I already have a student in mind, can I appoint without advertising?

No. While it is good if there interest from a particularly motivated student researcher, we would like the opportunity to be open to those who may not have considered a research career or heard about UROP before. All projects must be advertised for the specified minimum period before you interview any candidate and selection must be made on the basis of the person specification outlined in your application. (Interviews are not mandatory but are considered best practice.)

Can I work off-site with my student?

Yes, but please include this in your application and notify the UROP Officer.

Can my student complete the project remotely?

We feel that students will often get a more in-depth research experience being based alongside their supervisor or other researchers, however, in some cases it may be appropriate for some of the project to be completed remotely.

Please note, even if you are offering a project that can be completed remotely, the student will still need to be based in the UK for the duration of the project for payment reasons.

Can I select an international student?

As UROP projects are not classed as employment, any students may apply to do a project even if they do not currently have a legal right to work in the United Kingdom.

Please remember, as noted above, all students must be based in the UK for the duration of the project.

Do I need to acknowledge my student's contribution?

Yes. Where students are making a significant contribution to an area of a study they should be offered authorship or acknowledgements (as appropriate) on any resulting publications. Many previous projects have resulted in authorship for students.
