Areas of interest

My research focuses on two areas:

  • Firstly, the economics of climate change, in particular applying ecological economics and insights from energetics. A recent research project used experimental methods to study household energy use, aiming for insight into the 'rebound' phenomenon and potential for voluntary emissions reduction.
  • Secondly, experimental investigations of decision making, and related methodological issues. I have been looking at evidence contradicting received theories of economic behaviour and testing alternative theories, particularly ones positing 'social preferences' or collective rationality. The methodological work concerns both the concepts involved in such enquirers, and issues for the conduct and interpretation of behavioural experiments. Research students under my supervision are currently working on trialing biochar farming systems with smallholders in Malawi, and on explaining adoption rates of non-fossil fuel energy across countries. I welcome inquiries from research students in my areas of interest.
