It was a time when country workers and their families could relax, forget about work and either watch one of the many entertainers that enlivened the fairground or simply browse amongst the numerous stalls. Excited children might crowd round a clown or Punch and Judy show or else would create their own entertainment and games. Their parents could try their luck at one of the fair's sideshows, a coconut shy or shooting-gallery for example, sit and listen to the tunes of musicians or join those dancing. The fair also provided the opportunity to exchange news with old friends or to make new ones from the many people who travelled in from towns and villages further afield. However their time was spent, young and old alike would look back on the day with many good memories, whilst anticipating the next village fair with equal enthusiasm.
D ILN 85/6/420/1

7. Village fair
The village fair was an occasion for all the community to enjoy.
