It was a job that the average sized tractor of the day, moving at a constant steady speed for hours at a time, was well suited to perform. The two, and often three, horses that would otherwise be necessary imparted a jerkier motion to the machine that was less satisfactory for its quite intricate operations. On a hot summer's afternoon, they could also tire quite quickly and become restless if the binder had to keep stopping for adjustments to be made.
P DX281 PH3/211
