Staff Profile:Dr Darius Widera

Name:
Dr Darius Widera
Job Title:
Lecturer
Responsibilities:

Module convenor PM1A Fundamental of Physiology and ERASMUS and study abroad tutor

Areas of Interest:

I'm interested in adult stem cell research as well as in the influence of injury and inflammation on somatic cells (injury-induced cellular reprogramming). I want to understand how inflammatory signalling pathways (especially TNFR and TLR-mediated signalling) influence differentiation, proliferation and migration of stem cells.

I further work on various neural crest-derived stem cell populations, which are promising candidates for the development of autologous stem cell therapies. In particular, I want to address the following questions:

How do inflammation and infection influence stem cell-mediated regeneration of the brain and other tissues? Are pro- and anti-inflammatory signals beneficial or harmful to adult stem cells?

What is the ideal stem cell type for future use in personalisable regenerative medicine?

It is possible to increase the regenerative potential of autologous (belonging to the given patient), tissue-resident stem cells by manipulation of the inflammatory balance?

Can terminally differentiated Schwann cells be phenotypically reverted to neural crest stem cell-like state? Can such dedifferentiation approach be used within regenerative medicine?

What are the best conditions and methods to cultivate adult stem cells (3D vs 2D culture, biomaterials)
