The Placement Project

Accident and Emergency (A&E) services respond immediately to those people who are acutely ill. The Royal Berkshire Hospital Emergency Department (ED) sees on average between 380-460 patients a day. The team aims to provide the best possible care to all patients. The ED systematically monitors the progress of patients, however a comprehensive service evaluation of pain management has not been undertaken to date. Therefore a service evaluation to define current care will be conducted to identify what standard does the ED at the Royal Berkshire Hospital achieve. Patient records will be reviewed in clinic to retrospectively identify the service patients received. The student will attend the department and under the supervision of clinical staff will access Electronic Patient Records and complete data collection. The anonymised data will be analysed using descriptive analysis and written up in a report that may be used in publications to share the findings. The report will be presented back to the clinic to identify areas of best practice and areas for improvement. The Emergency Department was awarded university status in 2019 for the recognition of excellence in the areas of clinical outcomes, research and education. The recognition comes from a programme of collaborative research and education with the University of Reading. This project will develop new research collaborations between UoR and RBH.

Tasks

The student will obtain an honorary contract within the Royal Berkshire Hospital, then undertake Trust induction and training using Electronic Patient Records system. They will collect data on pain management within the ED, then analyse the data using descriptive analysis and write a report to summarise the findings.
