The Placement Project

This placement relates to Dr Matthew Nicholls' acclaimed digital model of ancient Rome. This digital model will form the basis of an online course (MOOC) on ancient Rome which will be made this summer. The MOOC will combine video material drawn from the model with written and visual resources (such as short articles, timelines, quizzes) to offer learners weekly activities focusing on different topics related to the ancient city. The placement student will help research and create this material, working from outline notes provided by Dr Nicholls and the MOOC team. The work involved will depend on the interests and abilities of the student but could include i) researching and writing short pieces, quiz questions, and notes on topics for the course ii) researching and creating visual aids like maps and graphics using e.g. Illustrator or Photoshop iii) assisting with the creation of 3D content, or rendered/animated 2D content, in SketchUp or Cinema 4D.

Tasks

Depending on the aptitudes of the successful applicant, tasks will include the production of written and visual resources for the MOOC.

Skills, knowledge and experience required

Impeccable written English is essential. Beyond that, research skills, presentation skills and visual/design flair would be helpful. Experience in any or all of the following software packages would be very valuable, but need not be a bar to a successful application: SketchUp, Unity, Cinema 4D, video editing, Illustrator, Photoshop.

Skills which will be developed during the placement

Researching and producing content for a large, mixed public audience to a deadline. Assisting in the production of a prestigious online course. Digital skills in image creation and manipulation.
