COSHH Risk Assessments - Non-Laboratory Work

AIM:

To enable staff who are responsible for or are working with chemicals or hazardous substances (including biological risks, dusts and fumes) in the workplace to assess the risks and, where necessary, to select and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

OBJECTIVES: ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Know the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations
  • Recognise the presence of hazardous substances
  • Understand the nature of exposure to hazardous substances and to apply the hierarchy of control 
  • Know what is required for selection of appropriate personal protective equipment

COURSE CONTENT:

  • Introduction to the COSHH Regulations
  • Products containing hazardous substances (hazard marking) 
  • How workers may be exposed to, and routes of entry of hazardous substances •
  • Use of PPE (as indicated in product instructions) 
  • Biological hazards including tetanus; Weil's disease; Legionellosis 
  • A COSHH assessment group exercise will be included to provide practice in completing assessments

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Staff who carry out COSHH assessments in the workplace. New Health & Safety Co-ordinators and managers of  grounds and maintenance staff, cleaning staff (and other areas where hazardous substances may be used or encountered). N.B.: any of these staff who have not attended a similar session in the last 5 years would benefit from refresher training.

PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:

Participants are requested to bring along an example of work involving the use of any product containing a hazardous substance in their area. They should provide as much documentation as possible - name of the product; a copy of the "instructions for use" and Material Safety Data Sheet (if available); method of use and quantity used.
