About the Marshall Scholarships

Marshall Scholarships finance American students of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.

Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at a UK institution in any field of study.

As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions.

Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success.

Scholarships are awarded for two years (with the possibility of a third year). The University of Reading supports a broad range of research areas but is particularly keen to support scholarships in the following areas of notable academic strength:

  • Climate, environmental sciences, and sustainability
  • Human nutrition
  • Food security
  • Language, cognition and the mind
  • Archaeology

Eligibility requirements

Applicants for the Reading Marshall Scholarship must:

  • fulfil the eligibility criteria required for a Marshall Scholarship and have been selected for a Marshall Scholarship;
  • have been selected by the MACC Committee to study at Reading; and
  • have applied for admission at Reading in the normal way and have been made an offer of admission to undertake graduate studies in any subject at Reading.
