MAFF Letter, 10 April 1997

Sweeteners in Food (Amendment) Regulations 1997

The Sweeteners in Food (Amendment) Regulations 1997 have been formally issued and come into force on the 14 April 1997. These Regulations implement the requirements of Directive 96/83/EC amending the earlier Directive 94/35/EC on sweeteners for use in foodstuffs. They take into account recent technical developments in the sweeteners market by extending the use of sweeteners already permitted by the Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1995 (1995/3123) to certain additional categories of food. They also add certain technical provisions to bring the 1995 Regulations into line with two other GB Regulations on Colours and the Miscellaneous Additives and they amend the title of the food category “vitamins and dietary preparations” to reflect more closely the needs of the market.

The Guidance notes issued at the beginning of 1996 with the primary regulations have now been revised and will be circulated within the next month.
