9 June 1999: CONTAMINANTS - Belgium must fully comply with Commission's decisions on Dioxin contamination

Commission Press Release (IP/99/386), 9 June 1999

Belgium must fully comply with Commission's decisions on Dioxin contamination

Following a meeting this afternoon between the European Commission and the Belgian authorities, the Commission reiterates its position that the Belgium Government must ensure the full application of the Commission's decisions in relation to the elimination of potentially contaminated foodstuffs from the market. While the Commission recognises the practical difficulties confronting the Belgian authorities in fulfilling this requirement for a number of reasons including uncertainty as to the source of the contamination, it sees no alternative approach at this moment in time which would provide the appropriate guarantees for the protection of human health. The Commission is ready to assist the Belgian authorities in this task but insists the full responsibility for ensuring compliance with the decisions rests with the Belgian Government and its authorities.
