28 July 1997: ADMINISTRATION - Proceedings against certain Member States for non-implementation of European Directives on food
Commission Release (IP/97/701 ), 28 July 1997
Proceedings against certain Member States for non-implementation of European Directives on food
The European Commission has decided to address reasoned opinions (the second stage in the infringement procedure provided for by Article 169 of the EU Treaty) to Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain for failing to implement a series of European Directives on food in their national legislation.
In detail, the Directives concerned and the Member States which have sent no notification of any measures implementing them are as follows:
- Directive 93/43 on the hygiene of foodstuffs: Greece, France, Ireland and Italy.
- Directive on plastic materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. This lays down which plastic materials may come into contact with foodstuffs and sets safety criteria covering, for example, material purity. No implementing measures have been notified by Belgium, Greece, France, Germany and Portugal.
- Directive on the hygiene of foodstuffs as regards the transport of bulk liquid oils and fats by sea: Portugal.
- Directive laying down specific purity criteria for sweeteners: Belgium and Portugal.
- Directive laying down specific purity criteria concerning colours for use in foodstuffs: Belgium.
- Directive on food additives other than colours and sweeteners: Belgium and Portugal.
- Directive on the labelling of foodstuffs: Belgium, Spain, France and Italy.
