CONTAMINANTS - Addendum to March 2017 legislative update on chemical contaminants in food

The FSA has provided some additional information on the Commission’s plans for addressing the issue of acrylamide in food.  Copies of the new Commission documents are available on this site – see links below. Note this 'Addendum' relates to the previous FSA document on the topic - see: 16 March 2017 CONTAMINANTS - March 2017 legislative update on chemical contaminants in food.

The EU Commission has provided a new draft of the proposed acrylamide regulation to EU Member States for discussion at the Standing Committee (SCoPAFF) on 27 March 2017. This is revision 9 of the text.

The draft proposal promotes obligations for acrylamide mitigation via food safety management systems/HACCP under Commission Regulation (EC) 852/2004. The most significant change is that the core elements from the food industry codes of practice are now incorporated directly in the annex of the proposal rather than in separate documentation.

The Commission has indicated that that there will be further technical discussion at the expert committee meeting for environmental and industrial contaminants on the 3 May 2017, this will include the draft text and draft bench mark levels.

If suitable progress is made the Commission intends to make the draft proposal available for comment on its website after this meeting. The Commission is hopeful that final agreement on the proposal can be made at the SCoPAFF committee meeting on June 19 2017.

FSA recommends that stakeholders provide any further constructive feedback to the Commission and Member States ahead of the meeting on the 3 May 2017.
