Understanding Food Labels in the UK

When you're shopping for food in the UK, you'll notice that most packaged products include nutritional information - this is a great way to make informed choices about what you eat.

By law, all food packaging must display a nutrition label, usually found on the back of the pack. This includes details like energy (in calories and kilojoules), fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and salt content.

Many supermarkets and food manufacturers also use a traffic light labelling system on the front of the pack. This colour-coded system helps you quickly understand whether a food is low (green), medium (amber) or high (red) in key nutrients like fat, sugar and salt. It’s a simple way to compare products at a glance.
