Areas of interest

Professor Hamley's research interests are focused on soft materials including biomaterials, polymers, colloids and surfactants. Activities range from peptide and biopolymer synthesis through to physico-chemical characterisation of self-assembly mechanisms and structures in these and related systems and fabrication of nanostructured materials. A major current focus is on bioactive peptides with therapeutic applications (including amyloid diseases such as Alzheimers, also anti-obesity treatments) and also uses of peptides and peptide conjugates as antimicrobial materials and in skincare. Another significant activity is in tissue engineering, especially for synthetic meat, but also cell growth media including novel hydrogels and collagen-stimulating materials. His group have considerable expertise in X-ray scattering experiments at Diamond and neutron scattering experiments at ISIS, along with other major facilities internationally.
