Introduction to Insect Identification

WaspIn this module we focus on the processes followed to identify species within some of the major groups of terrestrial insects. The groups considered in detail include: Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera. Other groups that are also covered but in less detail include Odonata and Orthoptera. The module is entirely hands-on and laboratory based. Each week students will be supplied with a series of preserved specimens or specimens collected by students from the field to be worked through in conjunction with the module convener. Insects are identified using modern binocular microscopes and the most up-to-date keys available for each group. The module integrates with Invertebrate Survey and Assessment (Autumn term) and addresses one of the major skills gaps identified by employers: species identification skills.

The module is entirely in-course assessed. Autumn Term, 10 credit module (Dr Graham Holloway) and Chris Foster (c.w.foster@reading.ac.uk).
