Description:
This course is the ideal choice if you are interested in language, its uses and varieties, and if you are considering a career working with languages or as a language teacher in the UK or abroad. Students taking this combined degree will find they can choose specialist modules in linguistics on offer in Italian Studies.

In English Language, 1 module chosen from a list of topics including:
Child Language Development
Language and the Mind
From Saxons to Shakespeare
Approaches to Spoken Discourse
English in the World

Year 3 (spent in Italy)

Dissertation
Italian University courses
Italian oral and written exams

Year 4

In Italian Studies: one compulsory language module, plus one or two optional "cultural" modules from a list of topics including:
Dante
European Cinema
Voice and the Self in Modern Italian Poetry 1900s-1980s
The South since 1860: Images and Reality
Court Culture in the Italian Renaissance
Intellectuals and Society in Twentieth Century Italy
Italian and its Varieties (Sociolinguistics)

In English Language, a choice of optional modules including:
Second Language Teaching and Learning
Core Issues in English Language Teaching
Language Pathology
Philosophy of Language
Language and Gender

Entry Requirements

UCAS Tariff: BBB/ABC from three A level subjects. Total points exclude Key Skills and General Studies. The total must include grade B at A Level English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature

Subject: Italian can be taken from beginners' level so no previous language qualifications are necessary.
International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma and achieve 6,5,5 in three higher level subjects including English.
Deferred Entry available.
