This MA is designed for students who wish to develop their knowledge of the discipline through selecting their own chronological, geographical and thematic specialisations from around 17 specialist modules offered, and through writing a substantial dissertation. It is also designed to enable students to develop key specialist skills in technical options.
Programme Content :
Students select and develop their own chronological and thematic specialisation by choosing three of the specialist modules on offer. These include options such as: Lower Palaeolithic of Europe, Early Agricultural Societies in the Mediterranean, Early Complex Societies in the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, Age of Stonehenge, Age of Hillforts, Roman Material Culture Studies, Archaeology of the Dark Ages, Europe in the Later Middle Ages; as well as themes such as: Burial Archaeology; Gender; Environment and Cultural Landscape in Prehistory, Coastal and Maritime Archaeology, Archaeology of Medieval Religion and Belief, Palaeopathology, Science and the Dead, Imperial Encounters in the Roman World and the Archaeology of Food and Nutrition.
Students also choose two technical skills modules from a range that includes Graphics, Archaeological Thought, Geophysics and Geoarchaeology or a language. They attend core modules on Research Skills and Dissertation Workshops and write a dissertation of 20,000 words on a topic of their own choice.
Students may obtain a Diploma in Archaeology by taking coursework for core and optional modules only.
