Professor Mitchell is part of the University-wide programmes with Dr Fred Davis (Chemistry), ElectroSPUN and EnviroPOLY. ElectroSPUN is concerned with nano and micro scale fibres produced by electrospinning and EnviroPOLY is focused on reducing the scale and scope of the environmental impact of plastic and rubber based materials and products. He is a member of the EU Napolynet network and the COST Action FA0904 Eco-sustainable Food Packaging based on Polymer Nanomaterials.
With Professor Ezra he is involved in the development of novel optical security devices. Other current research projects include nanoparticles for soil remediation, nanostructured polymers, intelligent polymer processing, use of recycled materials for high quality products, polymers with applications in drug release and other medical applications such as absorbable sutures and in polymers with electrical, electronic and photonic applications.
