I work as part of a team within the knight building which supports the Microbiology division of technical services. My main responsibilities as a teaching technician involved me assisting and demonstrating in the practicals for Building blocks of life and Medical Microbiology . I am also lead technician for the second year module "the bacterial cell" which involves me liaising with the lead academic to organise and prepare the classes to their specifications.

The other half of my job as a research technician has me supporting the activities of academics and PhD students working within the research labs as a laboratory coordinator. This support can vary from day to day ranging from assisting in setup of equipment, lab inductions for new lab members and ordering consumables for labs. During the autumn term I also assist and look after third year project students and support them during their dissertation.

Other responsibilities

I am also a part of the Staff/Student Postgraduate Research Committee acting as a representative of technical services from the Knight building.

I completed my undergraduate BSc (Hons) in Microbiology in 2014 from Aberystwyth University. Besides one or two small fixed term contracts in small commercial labs my first job out of university was working for the NHS at the Royal Berkshire hospital in the Microbiology department for two years before moving to the University of Reading.
