I joined the university as an assistant lab technician in the Microbiology Division to provide support to teaching and research primarily by making microbiological media.

Working in the lab includes good housekeeping, stock control, adhering to Health and Safety regulations and working in a manner that maintains a high standard of sterility.

I also manage the accounts for the glassware and media/buffer service for all academics as well as their project/PhD students.

My role has recently changed and I am now a trainee technician across both Microbiology and Zoology Divisions, expanding my role to assist in practical classes. Assisting with practical teaching includes sale of lab coats, being present in practical classes to provide support to students and academics, demonstrating techniques, preparing solutions and other materials. I have been trained in PAT testing.

Further information

Since joining the University of Reading I have undertaken work in a research lab (with Professor Ian Jones) here as an assistant in biomedical science/microbiology research focusing on Downstream Processing for Virology. Including cell/virus culture, inoculation, various protein expression, affinity chromatography (glycoprotein/IMAC) and gel electrophoresis, I learnt valuable techniques which I can take forward into my new technical role.

I have also become a member of the Technical Services Wellbeing Group and completed Mental Health First Aid England Training to provide support and information on services available to both staff and students.

I have an NHS admin background working primarily with elderly support services and the child and adolescent mental health service in Berkshire although I am originally from South London.

In my spare time I am currently working towards a BSc in Biomedical/Health Science.
