We assist with procedures for ordering specialist equipment such as autoclaves, gas regulators and ultralow freezers.
What we support
Procedure for ordering specialist equipment:
Specialist Equipment Suppliers
Please contact the Infrastructure Division for more information on preferred suppliers for the equipment listed below unless a specialist manufacturer repair required.
All pressure related equipment are to be registered through Technical services Infrastructure Division before use, this equipment will be held on a register by E&F. Examples of pressure systems are as follows: Autoclaves all types, Boiling pans, compressors, gas regulators and manifolds and laboratory piped gases.
Core and Research Autoclaves
Technical Services have a preferred supplier for Core Autoclaves, the core autoclaves are maintained by the contracted supplier at 6 monthly intervals, waste autoclaves are also pre-qualified on an annual basis.
The selection and specification of both core and research autoclaves can be made in consultation with the Infrastructure Division and are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use.
Gas regulators/ Manifolds
All gas regulators and manifold piped systems fall under pressure regulations, they to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use. Regulators should be delivered to LG13 or Chemistry Stores for registration. The Infrastructure Division is to be advised on new manifold piped systems at the planning stage.
Gas Regulators have a life of 5 years for non-corrosive gases or corrosive 1-2 years or otherwise stated by non EU suppliers, all regulators and manifolds are inspected by Technical services on an annual basis, users will be informed when replacement is due.
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)
All local exhaust & ventilation related equipment are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before. The equipment will be held on a register. Examples: Class 1 & Class 2 biological safety cabinets, chemical hoods, dust extractors, mobile fume extractors
Biological safety cabinets
All Class 1 & 2 Biological safety cabinets are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use. When the equipment is first installed, and on an annual basis thereafter, a KI discus test must be performed by the approved supplier, fumigation can be organised by request.
Technical services test CL2 cabinets on a monthly basis for inflow and down flow velocities.
Working at height equipment and lifting equipment
All ladders and access equipment are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use. Ladders should be fit for purpose and be at Category 1 standard for industrial use. All registered ladders and kick stools are inspected by Technical services on an annual basis.
All lifting equipment such as slings and mechanical lifting apparatus are to be registered. These items are registered and inspected by E&F for insurance purposes, contact the Infrastructure Division on receipt of these items to ensure registration.
-80 Ultra Low Temperature Freezers
All -80 freezers are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use. The preferred suppliers for -80 freezers are VWR for Eppendorf U570 Cryo cube models which have a 5 year warranty. The purchase of these models may attract a donation of up to £1k from the Sustainability team, please contact the Infrastructure Division for information before purchase.
Technical services Operations routinely clean all filters and perform battery checks on registered -80 freezers.
All Trolleys are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use.
All registered trolleys are inspected by Technical services Operations on an Annual basis.
F Gas Regulations
All refrigeration related equipment containing greater than 2.6kg of refrigerant are to be registered through the Infrastructure Division before use.
F gas Regulations require the University to maintain refrigeration equipment containing greater than 2.6kg of refrigerant on an annual basis.
Gas safe town gas appliances
All Town gas appliances are to be registered with the Infrastructure Division and E&F.
All gas appliances are subject to annual compliance checks by Gas safe engineers.
A register for new equipment valued at £10k or greater is maintained by the Infrastructure Division in collaboration with Procurement. If you obtain donated equipment with a value greater than £10k, please advise the Infrastructure Division giving equipment details e.g. type serial number, locations, value, along with any historical service documents.
