Arranging support for existing mental health and care needs

At Reading, we offer mental health, care and advice services to help you with your studies.

If you have existing mental health conditions or care needs, it is highly recommended that you connect with the Disability Advisory Service (DAS) team prior to arrival, to put in place reasonable adjustments as appropriate.

If you have existing mental health needs and are being supported by a local service (e.g.: CAMHS) Reading has a range of support available in the community, we recommend you connect with Reading Borough’s Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) prior to your arrival to arrange transfer any existing support services.

Similarly if you have care or physical support needs and have a current care provision we recommend you connect with Reading Adult Social Services Division. These services can take some time to arrange and your current provider should arrange all transfer of information and requirements a few months prior to your arrival.

RUSU

Reading University Students' Union

Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) is an independent body, ran by students, for students. Who better to speak to than those highly familiar with the needs and issues of all students?

Student Union Advice Services

RUSU Advice Services offer students support, guidance and confidential advice on personal, social, academic, financial and welfare matters. If required, the advisors are able to work closely with departments across the University such as the Counselling Service, Accommodation Office and central administration.

Student Union clubs and societies

RUSU is a large and active Students' Union, with a nationwide reputation. For a number of students the Union is what attracted them to Reading.

The Union is home to a wide range of societies and clubs, all of which are run voluntarily by students. There are currently over 150 societies and sports clubs, which all students are welcome to join.

If you are feeling homesick or just want to try something new these friendly groups are a great way for you to meet people, get involved and feel part of a community.

Read more about how the Students' Union can help and support you

One of the biggest assets of Reading for me has been the student support services. I was assigned a mental health advisor when I first joined, who helped me through the difficult transition stages of the first year. The counselling and disability services have been amazing in helping me apply for DSA and giving me any support I've needed.

Find out more about childcare at the University

The staff at the nursery are so welcoming and attentive to my son. His key workers made our transition into childcare smooth and manageable. I have to credit some of my academic success to the convenience of having the nursery on campus, and the peace of mind I feel knowing my child is safe and around the corner.
