Start date: July 2021

The International Foundation and Language Programme (IFLP) enables you to develop and strengthen your English language and academic skills and gain a place on an undergraduate degree of your choice at the University of Reading.

If you are an international student without British A level qualifications (or the equivalent) and would like to study at the University of Reading, but your confidence with English is quite low, then the International Foundation and Language Programme (IFLP) is the perfect foundation programme for you.

The IFLP is an extended international foundation programme with an entry point in July. You will complete eight weeks of English language training and then join the International Foundation Programme (IFP) in September. The IFLP is therefore the same as the IFP, but with the addition of eight weeks of language training at the start and greater English language support throughout the remainder of the programme.

The IFLP will prepare you for any University of Reading undergraduate degree and degrees at other leading UK universities. It is University-led and therefore subject to the same quality and assessment procedures as the rest of the University, ensuring a consistently high level of teaching. You can apply for scholarships to help fund your time here and, if you are aged 17 or over, you are eligible for a place in halls on our award-winning campus.

You will study International English Plus, Academic Skills and two subject modules. The subject modules depend on your choice of degree and they are shown in under the "Structure" tab of this page. You will be taught by the same experienced University academics who teach the undergraduates and postgraduates. An academic tutor will be assigned to support and guide you through your studies.

As well as improving your knowledge and skills the IFLP aims to familiarise you with life at University. We encourage all our students to take part in extra activities, make new friends and have new experiences. The IFP Away Day is the highlight of the IFP and IFLP calendar. Both staff and students visit an activity centre, giving you the chance to practice your skills in a new environment. You can put your problem solving, communication, and team building skills to the test whilst climbing, orienteering, and kayaking.

By the end of this programme you will have improved your English language skills, gained academic training in your chosen subjects and achieved the transferable skills necessary for undergraduate study. Upon successful completion of the IFLP and having met the specific entry requirements for your chosen degree, you will be guaranteed a place on your chosen degree course starting in September of the same year.

Fees

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £ per year

New international students: £23,700 per year

*UK/Republic of Ireland fee changes

UK/Republic of Ireland undergraduate tuition fees are regulated by the UK government. These fees are subject to parliamentary approval and any decision on raising the tuition fees cap for new UK students would require the formal approval of both Houses of Parliament before it becomes law.

EU student fees

With effect from 1 August 2021, new EU students will pay international tuition fees. For exceptions, please read the UK government’s guidance for EU students.

IFP scholarships and discounts

Please see our International Foundation Programme (IFP) website to find out more about scholarships and discounts for IFP students.

Additional costs

Some courses will require additional payments for field trips and extra resources. You will also need to budget for your accommodation and living costs. See our information on living costs for more details.

Financial support for your studies

You may be eligible for a scholarship or bursary to help pay for your study. Students from the UK may also be eligible for a student loan to help cover these costs. See our fees and funding information for more information on what's available.

Careers

The IFP qualifies you to study a full undergraduate degree at a British university, the gateway to a very wide range of fulfilling careers.

During the IFLP you will develop academic transferable skills such as the ability to produce high quality written work, think critically, communicate well, and interpret and analyse a range of information.

Around 80% of students who take the IFP at the University of Reading qualify to progress on to their chosen undergraduate degree with a large number gaining their degrees from Henley Business School, IMCA or the University of Reading Law School.

I enjoyed meeting new friends and the teachers are very good, especially my tutor. The Library and the overall campus is great.
