Examine key issues within the field of second/foreign language teaching and learning, and develop your understanding of both theoretical and pedagogical considerations of second language acquisition, on our MA Education (Second Language Learning and Teaching) master’s degree.
This degree is suitable for applicants who have experience of, or are interested in, the teaching of second/foreign languages. It covers topics such as:
- theories in second language acquisition
- research approaches to second language learning and teaching
- language teaching methodologies.
With a flexible structure – including full-time and part-time options – as well as a range of optional modules, you’ll be able to tailor this degree to your circumstances and interests.

Your learning experience will be interactive and practical, using technologies from presentation tools to social media, and with a mix of guided independent study and taught time.
Teaching methods include:
- work/institutional-based research.
Your work during the programme will be assessed through a range of written and oral coursework. There are no exams.
Based on our historic London Road campus, the Institute of Education offers dedicated, specialist teaching facilities. You’ll also have access to the Learning Hub, a comprehensive collection of teaching and research resources, as well as a technical equipment library and printing and binding facilities.
Our research covers a wide range of topics, from investigations into the acquisition of vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, to the use of digital tools.
The latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) placed us in the top quartile of education departments in the UK. More than 80% of our research publications were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Our research on education policy and practice in first and second language education was found to be world-leading.
