COVID-19 update
Find out how we’re adapting during COVID-19.
Do you have a passion for working with children and young people? Would you like to spread the enjoyment of subjects that you love? If so, then our education courses may be ideal for you.
Embracing the demands of the twenty-first century requires educated, engaged and active citizens – individuals with resilience and the confidence to tackle challenges. At the Institute of Education (IoE) we have the research, the expertise and the passion to help you transform lives through education.
We are proud to be ranked in the top ten in the UK for Education for over a decade (Guardian University Guide), and enjoy strong relationships with more than 300 local schools and early years settings that will provide you with placements and career opportunities.
As a student at the IoE, you will be taught by staff with extensive teaching and research expertise. Overall, 80% of our research outputs were rated world leading or internationally excellent in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014). The team includes those with experience of adult learners, early years, special needs schools, social care and classroom management. We received an overall student satisfaction score of 88% in the National Student Survey 2018, with 95% of students feeling their course provided them with opportunities to apply what they have learnt.
Our BA Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) degrees enable you to study to become a primary school teacher while developing your expertise in art, English, mathematics or music. This will give you the skills needed to champion your chosen specialism within primary education.
Our new BA Education Studies balances theory with practice to ensure you receive a well-rounded education with a strong focus on inclusion. You will be able to explore issues of diversity, social justice and disability.
If you already work with children, then you may be interested in our Children's Development and Learning courses. Our Foundation Degree is run in partnership with a series of local colleges, and you can take a year-long top-up course to turn it into a BA. Both courses are designed to allow you to study whilst working full-time.
The Institute of Education is housed at the University’s London Road campus, which was refurbished at a cost of £30m to provide excellent facilities for all our education courses. It is located in central Reading and within walking distance of the main Whiteknights campus.

I chose Reading because it looked really interesting to me as a musician. It gave me the opportunity to do something I loved in both ways: to build myself as a musician, developing my knowledge and pushing boundaries, as well as becoming a teacher. I didn’t see any other course like this one, with the musical depth. It really extends you.
