Clinical Placement

Summary:

The module provides students with an opportunity to work with an established clinical team. The team may be based at the University of Reading, or it may be based elsewhere. Allocation to any particular placement is the decision of the Module Convenor.

Students will be exposed to practical issues in an area of clinical relevance. They will work on practical problems and write a report about their activities, the skills they have acquired, and what they have learned about the particular field in which they have been embedded.

Acceptance onto the module is by interview during the programme application process.

Evidence-Based Treatments Across the Lifespan

Summary:

The module will give students the opportunity to learn about interventions for psychological and neurological conditions from clinical experts in the field.  A range of psychological disorders and their treatment will be examined, allowing students to develop an understanding of evidence based practice.  The module will cover a range of conditions, such as anxiety and depression, and intervention modalities such as cognitive behaviour therapy and systemic approaches.

Summary:

This module will provide students with an introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), including an overview of the importance of evidence-based psychological interventions based on current theoretical understanding of common psychiatric disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression). The module will also cover contemporary evidence relevant to both the models of psychological disorder and the efficacy of associated treatments. Students will be guided through key stages of CBT, including assessment, formulation, and endings. The module will also introduce therapeutic tools for treating common psychological disorders and discuss their practical application.

Building on undergraduate-level knowledge of cognitive neuroscience, the purpose of this module is to engage students with the current state of knowledge and debate in a selection of topics that fall under the umbrella terms “cognitive and affective neuroscience”. Topics reflect the expertise in our School and include: emotion (including pain) and regulation of emotion, cognitive control, beliefs and decision-making, and lifespan development of cognition-emotion interaction.

The module provides students with an understanding of the nature and importance of Systematic Reviews to clinical psychology and wider health contexts. It also provides training and practice in the basic skills required to conduct a Systematic Review. This combination of knowledge and skills will enable students to understand and evaluate evidence-based treatments used in clinical psychology, which will be of use across their programme and in future careers.

Methods in Cognition and Neuroscience

Summary:

The purpose of this module is to inform students about some of the methods used in the study of cognition and neuroscience research. The focus of the module is on methodological issues in the study of cognitive psychology and neuroscience, for example understanding the function of the brain using fMRI, EEG and TMS. Students read set material and discuss it in a series of seminars. Students are required to make informal presentations of written material.
