5 steps to Clearing at Reading on A level Results Day
Applying and accepting your offer

1. GET ORGANISED

Make a list of the courses you’re interested in, along with their UCAS code. On our course pages, we have the title of our courses followed by the UCAS code (a combination of letters and numbers).

Have all your results to hand before you apply (A levels and GCSEs or equivalent). If you are applying from outside the UK, make sure you let us know your English Language qualification scores (please see our accepted English Language qualifications), which must be valid through to the start date of your course.

Finally, write down our Clearing hotline number! We post this a few days before Clearing opens on our main Clearing website. If you Register Your Interest, we’ll send you a reminder of our hotline number. On Results Day itself, we will update our website with all the available courses and an indication of their entry requirements, so check from 08:00 on 18 August to see which courses we have available and whether you meet the entry requirements before you give us a call.

2. Contact us to apply

Make sure you have your UCAS personal ID (if you’ve previously applied via UCAS) and your qualifications (including any GCSEs or equivalents) to hand before you contact us. If you haven’t applied via UCAS, don’t worry – you can still apply to us in Clearing, but you will need to create a UCAS account to accept an offer.

We know that waiting on the phone can be difficult, but please be patient and continue to hold the line. We have a queuing system and will get to your call as soon as we can. If you hang up and try again, you’ll be added to the bottom of the queue.

If you submit an online application, keep checking your email (including junk/spam folders) as we’ll email you our decision. Make sure to double check your email address before submitting your application so that we can contact you.

3. accept your place

Congratulations on your offer! You’ll have until 12:00 (noon) on the day after we issue your offer to accept your place. If you don’t accept your place before 12:00 (noon), your offer and any additional guarantees will expire. You’ll then need to call us back so that we can check if there are still places available and whether we can re-issue your offer. To accept your offer:

  1. Sign into your UCAS account. If you don’t have a UCAS personal ID (for example, if you haven’t applied to university this year), you will need to register with UCAS . We recommend doing this as soon as you can.
  2. Once you’ve logged in, your UCAS status will say ‘You are in Clearing’ or ‘Clearing has started’. If you are already firm at another institution, you will need to follow the on-screen prompts to decline your firm place before your status changes:
Screen showing a UCAS status saying "You are now in Clearing".
  3. Go to ‘Your Choices’ in your UCAS account and click ‘Add Clearing choice’. Enter the University of Reading Institution code R12 in the ‘University or college’ field; then, in the ‘Course’ field, type in the UCAS course code to add the details for the course you've been offered:
Screen showing the UCAS dropdown menus to choose the course.
Tip! If the course code doesn’t appear in the drop-down list, don’t worry. Select ‘Other’ and manually type in the course code:
Screen showing the UCAS dropdown menus with a "Other" option selected.
  4. Your status will now show under ‘Waiting for decisions’ with the status text ‘The university or college is currently considering your application (Referred)’.
Screen showing a "Waiting for decision" UCAS status.
The ‘Referred’ status confirms that you want to take up your place at Reading, and you’ve done everything you need to do for now – it will display as ‘Referred’ for a few days while we verify your results and we’ll be in touch if we need further information. Once we’ve verified your results with UCAS, your status will update to ‘Unconditional’. We’ll then send you information about applying for accommodation (if you have been guaranteed accommodation as part of your Clearing offer), and other next steps, such as online enrolment and information about starting in September.

4. Apply for accommodation

We have dedicated Clearing accommodation available on our Whiteknights campus for September 2022 with a range of different halls options in both catered and self-catered halls. Visit our Clearing accommodation page for more information about the rooms we’ve reserved for our Clearing applicants.

If you received an accommodation guarantee as part of your Clearing offer, you’ll automatically be sent an email to book your accommodation once we’ve confirmed your final results. This can take a few days, so don’t worry if you haven’t yet received your accommodation booking email. Once you’ve received your email, simply follow the link to your RISIS application portal to book your accommodation.

Many of our students choose to live in private accommodation available to rent near campus, and our Accommodation and Reading University Students’ Union have information and advice available about how to search for and secure private accommodation.

5. Get ready

We’re thrilled you’ve found your place with us and we look forward to you joining the Reading community in September. There are a few things you will need to do before then:

  • Student Finance. Student Finance England (SFE) have a short video explaining what you need to know. If you get a place through Clearing and haven’t yet applied for a student loan, don’t worry. You can apply via the SFE online service.
If you’ve already applied for student finance and then change your course/university through Clearing, you’ll need to let Student Finance England know as soon as possible, as it may affect what you're entitled to. To do this, log into your SFE online account and then select: Your Account, Change your application, University/college and course. There’s a different process if you’re a student from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, so please be sure to check with your relevant student finance authority.
  • Me@Reading Applicant. Me@Reading Applicant is a great resource for applicant information. Log in using your 8-digit Reading ID (on your offer letter) and date of birth, and you’ll be able to see useful information about your department, Welcome Week and starting your course.
  • Check your email. Make sure you continue to check your email –we’ll be contacting you with information about your application as well as starting your course in September, including Welcome Week.
