What do young people need to know to help us to look after our climate? How could our education system better prepare young people for the challenges of a changing climate?

Climate stripes lesson plan

This video of Professor Ed Hawkins MBE, one of our climate scientists at the University of Reading, has been developed to support climate education in secondary schools.

Watch the video with your class and use the supporting lesson plan, or the additional activities below, to engage your students in climate change.

More climate lesson ideas

Mural

Create a mural using the climate stripes (or perhaps oceans) as a theme. This could be created using waste materials; be a focus for a lesson about abstract art; could be used for learning about colour theory; created by weaving or other techniques.

Climate change display

Using the statements for change, create a large display in a prominent/common area in the school to raise awareness.

Make it happen!

Work with your student council/school leadership to fully implement at least one of the pledges for action.

Wildlife area

Create an environmental area in your school and see how much wildlife can be attracted. There are some useful resources on the Young People's Trust for the Environment website.
