Master's research programmes

At the University of Reading, you have the opportunity to apply for one of our exciting master's level programmes which provides research-led excellence for pharmacy students.

How you'll learn

When you choose one of our master's research programmes, the first 11 weeks of the course are spent undertaking core taught modules to gain practical and theoretical experience.

Once complete, you will then take part in a 30-week research project to put your learning into practice. We have many research projects to choose from, for each of the three master's programmes on offer.

Across the University of Reading we have invested in facilities that will inspire our students and maximise their potential. Facilities you will have access to whilst studying include:

Hopkins Building ─ a cutting-edge research facility hosting microscopy, electrophysiology and cell culture suites, and all requisite equipment and expertise to support MSc projects.

Brain Embodiment Laboratory (BEL) - including two EEG labs, a tissue culture lab for maintaining and recording cellular cultures, robotics and hardware labs for developing human-machine interfaces, and high-throughput computing clusters for online and offline data analysis.

Chemical Analysis Facility ─ a state-of-the-art instrument suite that includes NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and scattering, optical spectroscopy, thermal analysis and electron microscopy.

Setting you up for your career

The research projects within these master's programmes will often feature joint academic supervision and input from our existing project partners from the pharmaceutical industry and major UK charities.

Our projects are geared towards the needs of academic, industry, and charity research priorities to ensure maximum graduate employability for you when you're finished.

100% of leavers who reported their main activity to be full-time employment were in graduate level roles 15 months after the end of their course (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2017/18; Postgraduate (Taught) responders from School of Pharmacy).*

  • Molecular neuroscience
  • Neurodegenerative disease
  • Ion channels and receptors in disease
  • Neuronal stem cells and regenerative medicine
  • Neurodynamics and cognition

MSc by Research in Formulation Design & Analysis

You can choose projects with specialists in research areas including:

  • Drug delivery
  • Nanoscience
  • Polymers, biopolymers and biomaterials
  • Materials science
  • Synthesis and analysis of organic modules
