Summary module description:

This module examines, from an international comparative perspective, key issues in management and entrepreneurship such as corporate governance, innovation strategy, entrepreneurial culture, management education and the increasingly entrepreneurial role of managers in modern business.



The module starts with an examination of globalisation and the financial crisis before going on to consider the basic components of business systems in different countries.  Then we consider the US, European and Asian business systems in detail.


Aims:

This module is concerned with national variations in entrepreneurship, innovation and organisation behaviour, and how these differences influence firm performance. 


Assessable learning outcomes:

This module is designed for entrepreneurial individuals to enable them to



:develop an appreciation of the function of entrepreneurial management across border;



:develop an understanding of entrepreneurial dynamics within existing ecosystems



:consider the impact of resources and mechanism in relation to global entrepreneurial management



 



A good knowledge of key issues in international management such as the theory and varying practice of corporate governance, judgemental decision making, management education and key institutions governing innovation and performance in the world’s leading economies.


Additional outcomes:

Students will learn to work independently under pressure of time, and to organise diverse empirical material.


Outline content:

* Comparative systems of corporate governance, entrepreneurial culture, business eco-system and management education * Comparative entrepreneurial management and patterns of innovation in leading economies


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Detailed guidance on the main topics of the syllabus and key references are provided in 10 x 2 hour sessions of lectures, seminar questions and discussions. Students are required to do a significant amount of reading of journal articles and chapters of books.

Summative Assessment Methods:

Written assignment including essay 30

Summative assessment- Examinations:
One 2-hour unseen written paper.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

1 essay test to be taken place after week 6 (timetable week 10).



1 essay of 2,500 words to be submitted in the last week of the Spring term.



Upper limit of word count: A word count of 10% excess is allowed for the written assignment essay. Exceeding the word count will attract a penalty whereby written work beyond the 10% excess is discounted in the grading of the assignment.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

The pass mark is 50%+.



The merit mark is 60%+.



The distinction mark is 70%+.


Reassessment arrangements:

By examination only (one 2-hour unseen written paper) in August/September. Coursework will not be included in the re-assessment.
