Summary module description:

This module aims to provide an opportunity for students in PG programmes to develop relevant skills to manage an independent research project, in terms of critical evaluation of existing literature, and appropriate collection and analysis of accounting and finance information. The completion of the project will be guided and supported by supervisors with relevant expertise in accounting and financial management. 


Aims:

To provide students with an opportunity to define and execute an independent piece of research in international accounting and/or finance.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to: 1. Identify and summarise the key issues of a topic 2. Design, explain and justify the research approach adopted 3. Identify, summarise and critically appraise relevant literature (where appropriate) 4. Identify, analyse, and evaluate collected data (where appropriate) 5. State, explain and justify given conclusions/chosen solutions 6. Organise and present information clearly, succinctly and in the required format.


Additional outcomes:

The self-directed nature of study for this model should develop student’s ability to research, problem-solve and learn independently and to making effective use of their time and the resources available.


Outline content:

•Spring term lectures will introduce students to the requirements of the project

•Summer term lectures will develop this and will be supported where necessary by workshops

•Individually tailored supervision where requested by the student will support progress during the summer term


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Lectures will be used to provide initial guidance. Students will also be allocated a tutor to act as supervisor. The supervisor will provide a minimum of three hours contact for consultation as necessary. Learning will largely be student-centred and unique to the student.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
None.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

One 6,000 - 8,000 word project on an approved topic related to the programme. A 10% excess is allowed. The project will have a 100% weighting in the overall assessment. It is to be submitted in summer vacation, i.e. Friday 9th August 2019 for candidates without resit exams and Friday 6th September 2019 for those with summer resit exams.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A mark of 50%. This module has been designated as a module of special significance for the MSc Accounting and Financial Management and the MSc Accounting and International Management programmes. Therefore, it is a requirement of the award of MSc that students undertaking the Accounting and Finance Project must achieve a minimum mark of 40%.
