Summary module description:
This module is a Finance Dissertation available only to students on the MSc Financial Research programme.
Aims:
The aim of the dissertation is to allow students to define and execute a piece of research in finance on a topic of their choice, with direction from an academic supervisor and with assistance from a doctoral student support supervisor. They will develop high-level skills in literature review and critical evaluation, research design and analysis.
Assessable learning outcomes:
Successful completion of the dissertation requires students to define and execute a piece of research in finance.
They will be required to seek out and to critically evaluate published literature in a particular field.
Students will improve their report-writing skills, learning how to structure their study, and how to place their findings in the wider context.
Additional outcomes:
The self-directed nature of study for this model should encourage students to be resourceful in their search for relevant literature and data, and to manage the various stages involved effectively, leading to timely submission of the finished piece.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
An initial lecture will be held during the spring term to explain the objectives and required format of the dissertation, although almost all of the work will be conducted during the summer term and over the summer vacation. Students will then select a provisional topic or title, will submit it, and will be allocated an academic supervisor and a doctoral student support supervisor, and will commence work on the dissertation.
