Summary module description:
This module allows students to focus on the hundred years war.

Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the causes, events and effects of Anglo-French hostilities in the 14th and 15th centuries, and with a broader appreciation of the distinctive characteristics of warfare in this period, and of the role the conflicts played in the formation of national identities.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
􀀕 identify and explain the main issues and events of the war
􀀕 acquire a detailed knowledge of the events through extensive reading in specialised literature
􀀕 locate and assemble information on the subject by independent research
􀀕 appraise critically the primary sources and historical interpretations of the subject
􀀕 organise material and articulate arguments effectively in writing

Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to encourage the development of oral communication skills and the student􀀒s effectiveness in group situations. Students will also develop their IT skills by use of relevant web resources, and their numeracy by examination of medieval use of figures and of changes in monetary values over time.

Outline content:
The content is organised by themes drawing upon student interest. Areas to be considered can include: Who fought in the war?; Organisation and financing of war; Anglo-French relations before Edward III claimed the throne of France in 1340; Key battles and military strategies; technology and warfare; economic and political links between England and Gascony and relations with Scotland; the war down to 1399, giving detailed attention to the twentieth-century debate on the origins of the war and to the reasons for English success down to the treaty of Bretigny of 1360, and for failure and stalemate thereafter; Henry V􀀒s conquest of Normandy, and his acceptance by the French as regent and heir to the throne by the treaty of Troyes in 1420; from 1422, England and France the 􀀑double monarchy􀀒 and Joan of Arc; the reasons for subsequent English expulsion from all their continental lands save Calais and the Channel Islands; the concept and nature of 􀀑occupation􀀒 and 􀀑nationalism􀀒 in this period.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Most of the topics are taught through seminars, which involve student preparation, discussion and the presentation of one major essay. Depending upon the choice of topic, the seminars may centre upon the presentation and discussion of various kinds of historical source material, including written texts and paintings. Teaching is through tutorials, normally on a fortnightly basis, but arranged to coordinate with progress in the essay.

The module will normally be assessed by one essay of 4000 words (EXCLUDING bibliography and footnotes/endnotes)
-5 points for overlength work (above 5% of word limit)
-10 points for late submission (one week for all students, FT, PT or modular)
