Summary module description:
This module provides a context to explore self-awareness and developing practical management skills. It will take students back to basics to evaluate the skills they currently have through a personal and practical approach, incorporating lectures, workshops, group discussion, experiential techniques and 1:1 coaching, this module will deliver effective tools and techniques including a strategic personal plan of how the student will apply their understanding of management, motivation, change, communication and leadership behaviours to the management and leadership challenges they face at work.

Aims:
In this module a systematic knowledge of management will be deployed to allow students to consider their organisational context. Throughout, they will be exposed to the complexity, ambiguity and uncertainty that underpin many management situations.
The module aims to prepare learners to:
1. Develop their understanding of the leadership journey present and future, current leadership theories and personal thought leadership
2. Understand the Myers – Briggs Type Indicator preferences and their impact in various contexts, personally and with others
3. Develop strategies to maintain energy and motivation, including identifying stress triggers and delegating effectively
4. Explore change models and how to support yourself and others through the transition
5. Explore the stages of team development, the characteristics of high performing teams and what is required of the leader at each stage
6. Identify the key values and motivators, understanding how your leadership and communication styles impact on others motivation

This module explores management practice in the context of the following areas: Operational Management, Leading and Managing People, Building Relationships, Communication, Awareness of Self and Others, and Management of Self
By the end of the module the student will be able to achieve the following:
1. Operational Management
a) Understand how to initiate and manage change by identifying barriers and know how to overcome them.(A5)
b) Support manage and communicate change by identifying barriers and overcoming these (A9)

a) Understand different leadership styles (D1)

Outline content:
Students will be required to explore the roles that they play as individuals within the organisation and the difference they can make in the context of management challenges and the role of personal learning and development. They will question the way individuals may contribute to organisational aims and to change within the organisation. Students will be able to explore factors that contribute to engagement and motivation, both internal and external to the workplace. They will explore people as social beings and how this impacts behaviours and performance. They will be expected to apply learning to their work place and be able to assess individual and organisational practice in the management of people.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module will be taught using a blended learning approach. This will include directed self-study, lectures, workshops, group discussion, experiential techniques and 1:1 coaching, as well as other learning activities. During the module, students will follow a guided-learning path that will require them to read materials, access other core and optional learning materials and undertake a range of activities. In addition to the learning path, students will attend workshops. These are facilitated sessions that will help consolidate knowledge, apply it the workplace and develop higher order cognitive skills of analysis and evaluation. Students will be expected to relate their learning to their day-to-day work.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
Students will reflect on the taught component of this module by developing a reflective report for future professional development. This will contribute to 100% of the assessment and will build on a patchwork of the formative writing assignments the learner will undertake monthly. They will be required to reflect on their group and individual work to ensure their reflective practice is underpinned from an evidence based, theory informed approach, to inform future professional development planning.
Formative assessment methods:
Will be embedded in the learning path and workshop activities, discussion and peer back within the workshop sessions will be encouraged and the apprenticeship tutor and programme faculty will also provide feedback on the report as it builds through monthly writing assignments that collate the learners reflections.
